South Africa back in the race for nuclear energy as the answer

Least we forget!!!The people of Chernobyl are still suffering, can we allow South Africa to take a similar route? NO NO NO PLEASE SAY NO TO BANTAMSKLIP POWER STATION IN SOUTH AFRICA

Peace cranes, lit candles and fasting in solidarity

I honour the winter with its snow covered landscapes and rich impressions of a resting MOTHER NATURE.
The atomosphere here in Switzerland is rather grey and unfriendly, people commenting on too much snow, very cold, the most serve winter in many years etc. Is MOTHER NATURE responding to our lack of LOVE.
All this while having so much resources-jobs, warm homes, food in abundance etc.
Yet out there we are having to address the needs of hundreds of refugees who have had to flee their homes in search of protection against serve Human rights violations, wars, poverty and climate changing events that have changed their lives.
We celebrate gratitute for life and the ability to contribute to a vision of a world without nuclear weapons, waste and energy. Not forgetting all the uranium mining.
At the moment in Europe the French president and his counterparts are brokering the increase of nuclear power plants at a huge conference in Paris. Paying scat attention to the major question of the enormous waste generated and how this aspect is being addressed in a constructive manner. (Jerome, the French walker has a very good example of how France deals with its waste-Football/sports parking areas are the sites for waste)
The scramble is on to take care of the climate change problem, but at what costs and by whom?
The USA & Russia - its presidents are discussing reducing the active nuclear arsenal.
What a shame they do not listen to what we want "A WORLD WITHOUT ANY NUCLEAR WEAPONS, WASTE and ENERGY."
In COPENHAGEN November 2009 , there were over 5'000 people from all over the world from many grassroots communities discussing, debating, exhibiting via workshops, conferences, films, exhibitions, brochures, theater, music concerts, newspapers and an array of many other wonderful creative and exciting media, all telling stories of how people are addressing and taking care of MOTHER NATURE. An official declaration is available.
We a small group of women lit candles, make peace cranes and are fasting for 7 days.
We are with you.
It begins with a small step and every step is a step in the right direction.

West Valley, Students, Rain and Sweat

Our rest day today began with a 5 A.M. sweat lodge hosted by Seneca Nation of Indians friends conducted by Ed Walker, pipe carrier and pipe carriers Al White and Dinah Porter. Last Thursday, we were joined by Jocelyn Jones, Seneca Language teacher at Angola Lake Shore Middle School and 21 of her 6th to 8th grade students. We were inspired by their spirits as they walk with us over 8 miles. Later that day as we participated in a previously scheduled community Meal, we met again with some of the same students who were all clearly proud of their walk and we were thrilled with the knowledge of Mother Earth that they aquired that day.The good spirits inspired our walking in rain for most of the next 2 days. West Valley Nuclear Waste Site will be discussed at length at tonight's community meeting here in Buffalo

This blog will hopefully gain more authors and more commenters. Pictures will be added when we can download them and have internet access.

March 6th to March 10th

Saturday, March 6th, loaded up at the Grafton Peace Pagoda and drove into Albany to pick up rest of walkers. After a wonderful breakfast hosted by Jen, Mike Aurora and Thatcher and a short prayer ceremony with the Albany Community, 20 people in four cars set out for western New York. Beautiful weather greeted us on the 325 mile trip to Steamburgh, New York. Steamburgh is in the southern part of the Seneca Nation, near Allegany State Park. We were met by the native people and many local supporters and offered a meal. Openiong ceremony started with Ganonyoh, then a talk by Lloyd Elm followed by Gahadago big drum with Lloyd Elm, Al White, Wayne Porter, David Paterson. Diane D'Arrigo of Nuclear Information Research Services gave an excellent overview and update of the West Valley Nuclear Waste Site. In operation for only 6 years, abandoned by it's corporate owners and left for New York State and the Federal Government to clean up. Forty years later, no good solutions appear and billions of dollars will follow billions of dollars will be spent on the cleanup. The sad part is that the government hasn't learned anything as they continue to fund new bombs at Y-12 in Oak ridge, Tennessee and new power plants in Georgia with no idea as to deal with the waste.

As most of you know, caring for Mother earth is a sacred native tradition as told to us in the Ganonyoh. The following day, we walked from Steamburgh to Salamanca on the old route 17. Minimally plowed and with barely any traffic, it was a spiritual treat and a good connection with mother earth. Moving to Ellicottville on the 8th, we were hosted in the historic Unity Church. For the last 2 days, we enjoyed home stays after walking. We walked to the West Valley site today ande prayed in the native and buddhist with other interfaith prayers offered.

The 5th of March .Yesterday with Jules we've installed a cargo box on the top of the 'Peacevan' roof. Today ,with Mia we're driving to Grafton Peace Pagoda where June San is waiting for us. Our luggage is packed,we're ready to go!

Getting Close

Yesterday I picked up Jerome from Newark Airport. Jerome is walking the whole way and comes from France. He is a member of Reseau Sortir du Nucleaire, a French Antinuclear group that walked in Europe with the Footprints for Peace walks. Although very new on the computer, Jerome will post to this blog in French while Mia has offered to post in Japanese.

Jerome also brought a message and prayer from Glenda who walked for Nuclear Disarmament in Europe last year.Written on a card using waste materials, she says March, 2010 May our lives be like this waste to create a focused way forward. From waste to art. May the walk express your creative love and engagement. I walk with you and take the walk message with me to South Africa. May all the tools that we need be there when we need it. Much love, Glenda
